allowed in food by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) might surprise you.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/ingredients-additives-gras-packaging-guidance-documents-regulatory-information\/food-defect-levels-handbook#chemical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" rel=\"nofollow\" >According to the FDA<\/a>, it is \u201ceconomically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects\u201d.<br \/>\nThe FDA uses the term &#8220;defect&#8221; margin-bottom: 20px;\"><\/div>\n<h3>FDA Defect Action Levels<\/h3>\n<p>The FDA listing of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/ingredients-additives-gras-packaging-guidance-documents-regulatory-information\/food-defect-levels-handbook#commodities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" rel=\"nofollow\" >Food Defect Action Levels<\/a>&#8221; which covers many of the products contained in this manual, includes approximately 200 action levels for various types of defects in some 75 individual food products.<br \/>\nDefect action levels are limits set by the FDA to define the extent of contamination acceptable in food.
